Today’s Devotion – 30-09-09 (Wednesday):

Heed the Signposts

And your ears will hear a word behind you, saying, This is the way; walk in it, when you turn to the right hand and when you turn to the left.

ISAIAH 30:21

            Suppose you are driving along the road. In the middle of the road are lines. Some are yellow double lined warning that if you cross them, you run a high risk of being in a head – on collision. Some are broken white lines that mean you can cross into the other lane and pass the car in front of you as long as you are cautious and check for oncoming traffic.

There are also signposts that give specific direction or warning: “Detour,” “One Way,” “Under Construction,” “Curve Ahead.” If you heed the instructions, you will avoid getting into an unsafe situation.

The same is true in life. There are spiritual signposts that instruct us about how to stay under God’s protection. If you will heed these signposts, you will be able to safely remain on course. For example, always follow peace and you will be going in the right direction.

Cooperate with God’s Plan

For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome.

 JEREMIAH 29:11

                God has a plan for every person and His Word clearly says it is a good plan. But Satan starts his dirty work early in your life, attempting to pervert and destroy God’s good plan. He arranges for all kinds of disappointing, discouraging, hurtful, and frightening events to take place. And often he does a lot of damage.

            But no Matter how much you have been hurt, God can restore you. If you experienced a bad beginning, do not despair. God is in the business of repair, and His repairs are better than new. However this restoration will not happen automatically. You must believe the Word of God and fully cooperate with Him during the restoration process. Look to Jesus, the One who loves you unconditionally. He is the Author and Finisher of everything in you and your life.

Don’t Exceed Reasonable Limits

Do you not know that your body is the temple… of the Holy Spirit Who lives within you … You are not your own, you were bought with a price …So then, honor God and bring glory to Him in your body.

I CORINTHIANS 6:19-20

            In today’s world, stress is a normal part of everyday life. God created you to With-stand normal amounts of pressure and tension, and if you keep stress within reasonable limits, there is no problem. But if you don’t, the trouble begins.

Many stressful situations are unavoidable, but too often you cause yourself extra stress by working too hard and too long, not eating and sleeping properly, and getting so involved in activities – even good works-that you exceed wise limits. If you keep adding to that mental and emotional stress, you get into trouble.

If you are pushing yourself beyond reasonable limits, it’s time to remember that the Holy Spirit lives in you. You owe it to Him and to yourself to let Him help you recognize and stay within your limits. Don’t burn out. Burn on!

Hurt …Heal … Help…

God’s love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

 ROMANS 5: 5

            Sometimes people say or do things that hurt you, but you have the God-given ability to love these people. One good way to start is by following the well-known golden rule. It isn’t easy. In fact, it requires discipline. But God will help you if you really want to do it.

Discipline is your friend – it is the ability God gives you to walk in His ways. Although it is difficult, discipline is temporary discomfort that can lead to permanent or long-term enjoyment.

If you’ve been hurt and learned to overcome it, you have a valuable tool to help others. God comforts us so we can comfort others. Here’s the progression: We are hurt … we allow God to heal us … and we are ready to help others. Hurt… heal … help! It’s a process that can literally change your life … and the lives of many others around you.

Quick to Love, Slow to Judge

And walk in love , as Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us.

EPHESIANS 5:2

                You are instructed to walk in love. To esteem and delight yourself in others, you have to first get to know others, which is an act of love. It takes time and effort to look beyond the surface of any human being. Too often we are tempted to judge hastily, but the Word says, “Be honest in your judgment and do not decide at a glance (superficially and by appearances); but judge fairly and righteously” (John 7:24).

            Before you judge an individual, you must take time to get to know the real person. Everyone has their little quirks, oddball actions, behaviours, and imperfection. God Himself does not judge by appearance – He looks on the heart. You should follow His example. As the saying goes, ”never judge a book by its cover”!

Change the things that need changing, leave as they are the things that don’t need changing,

and ask God to help you know the difference.

Love Man … Trust God

Many believed in His name… but Jesus did not trust Himself to them … for He Himself knew what was in human nature.

 John 2 : 23-25

Jesus loved people, especially His disciples. He had great fellowship with them, travelled with them, ate with them, and taught them. But he didn’t put His trust in them, because He knew human nature.

This doesn’t mean He had no trust in His relationship with them; He just didn’t open Himself to them in the same way that He trusted in and opened up to His heavenly Father. That is the way you should be.

Many times people form close relationships and depend on their friends to be there for them instead of looking to God. But you don’t want to do that. Even in the best relationships, people will disappoint you because people are not perfect.

It is right to love and respect others, but always remember that only God can be counted on to never fail you!
